The rolling mill at Ravenscraig Steel Mill in Motherwell, Scotland was closed in the mid 1980s but provides this powerful, industrial image. Ingots of red hot steel are accelerated back and forwards through the water-cooled rollers until they reach the thickness required for casings of consumer items such as washing machines or vehicle body panels. At a speed of approximately 60mph, the flattened sheet is captured by a large claw and rolled onto large cylinders.

An excellent industrial image and so suitable for black and white.
