East meets West with an explosion of life that assaults the senses in Cairo. The city boasts world-famous attractions such us the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza and the Egyptian Museums. Further south lies Luxor, often described as the 'best open-air museum in the world', with a unique and heady mix of temples, tombs and palaces intertwined with souks and hotels. A leisurely cruise south along the Nile reveals more ancient wonders such as the Temple of Khnum in Esna, Edfu Temple dedicated to Horus, the hawk-headed god of the sun and the 'double temple at Kom Ombo built in tribute to Horus and Sobek, the crocodile god. The most beautiful stretch of the Nile is found in Aswan, a relaxing town with a tangible African ambience and the perfect base to visit the temple of Isis on Philae Island or, further afield, the awe-inspiring temple of Abu Simbel.
