Digital Technique - the artist comments: A SUMMARY OF MY TECHNIQUE WOULD BE: that I use modern software to more sculpture a 2D piece than draw it = clone, stamp, shape, reshape, texture and shade, all done in hundreds or thousands of inefficient steps. You will see me do, from time to time, original basic photography and certainly mixed media creations. I enjoy the variation. But the transition of my work, over years, has been to a more pure digital art. Usually, the same processes that you see in works of geometric digital art, that is, the layers, the multiple effects, the additional shapes are introduced into my works. But they are unique, not programmed, and secondary to what must happen to my subject. The human pose must remain the main item in the whole scene. The effects that control color, contrast, shapes, replication, dimension, et al, are applied to only very small areas of the subject at any one time. This is because the far reaching functions of PhotoShop, and those programs labeled as original digital design programs, tend to pull the subject in and make it fit as a loose identity within the total scene. Direct digital painting is then applied within and between other digital effects, as necessary. I wish to keep at least the personality of the subject clearly identifiable, even if I have changed it previously for my purposes. When digital technology is applied, even with lassos, marquees and other zone protectors, there is always the chance of destroying the original pose. I accept that probability. Sometimes, the last series or waves of effects were so desirable, in general, that it is not a choice to go back and remove them, merely because an eye, face, head, breast, or other body parts disintegrated. Since my original pose, as with the traditional artist, is only a first sketch, I will reconstruct or completely change the anatomy at that point by drawing , with a mouse. Having played the geometric generation game and having found that the programs of shapes and layers are even more predictable than starting with a sketch; I find the application of the same technology on, around and through human anatomy, that in itself can be changed, to be much more challenging. This is the opposite of what many would have you believe as they fight over the digital domain. But I know that the traditional artists among us would acknowledge immediately, the implications of shading, shaping and the use of black. I wish to add something to all of the above that I never see discussed on any forum where the technique philosophies are overstated - the impact is more than doubled by having both beauty and a story.
