Human nature has always fascinated us. How do we do the things we do? Why are we the way we are? What are our limits? This fascination is not simply narcissism. Humankind is a worthy object of study because we have interesting, perhaps even astonishing, capacities and complexities. Some of these capacities and complexities are, in at least their degree, unique to humans. Nonetheless, we are part of the natural world. We are subject to the same laws of nature as the rest of the world, composed of the same sorts of stuff as other things in nature, and have been affected by evolutionary pressures in the same way that other creatures have. The study of human nature must take into account both that we are special and that we are not special.
